THE RELIANT
Stokes Croft
Bristol
In 2017 we were appointed to design a new multi-purpose hospitality and leisure venue in central Bristol. The scheme, for Bristol-based business Portland Brown, involves the renovation, conversion and extension of a cycle shop and motorcycle showroom into 1650 SqM of hospitality space. This included event-space, a bar and restaurant design, a taproom, a micro-distillery, a micro-brewery, an external courtyard and roof garden.
The design focuses on the creative re-use of two 1950s existing light-industrial buildings to create an exciting social venue with a community focused atmosphere. Sustainable features include a roof mounted PV array, green roofs and lightweight low-carbon structure and cladding.
The concept design was developed by SMH up to the end of stage 4, with our friends at Stretto Architects Ltd picking up reigns as executive architects to take the project forward to construction.
The building is one of several projects we have designed for Portland Brown, including their head office, directly opposite this site.
